4 TYPES OF FREEZERS:

  • Upright — ideal for storing larger amounts of samples that are accessed on a regular basis.
  • Undercounter — ideal for storing smaller amounts of samples that are handy to have right at your workspace.
  • Chest — ideal for longer term storage of samples or for storing larger containers that may not fit in an upright freezer.
  • Portable — compact, lightweight and can be run on a 12V DC battery, a vehicle adapter or 120V AC power. Ideal for field use, transportation or as an alternative to dry ice when shipping frozen samples.

3 TEMPERATURE RANGES:

  • General purpose: -20 to -30°C.
  • Low temperature: -30 to -45°C.
  • Ultra-low temperature: -45 to -86°C.

What to look for:

  • Fast temperature recovery rates after door openings.
  • Inner compartmental doors on upright freezers.
  • Great overall temperature uniformity.
  • Low energy costs.
  • Quiet operation.

NOTES:

  • Some freezers have pre-set temperature points, while others can be set digitally in degree increments.
  • Upright freezers have multiple shelving options and rack configurations that make it easy to properly organize freezer space.
  • Upright freezers tend lose cold, heavier air more easily than chest freezers, resulting in a more dramatic temperature deviation. Upright models with inner compartmental doors can help prevent this extra cold air loss.
  • Flammable material freezers are available and are designed to protect lab personnel, the environment and stored materials that are flammable or volatile. They include hermetically sealed compressors and CFC-free and spark-proof materials.
