Highly polished gram weights are made of Alloy 8 stainless steel possessing low magnetic properties, uniform consistency and high resistance to corrosion. Fractional weights from 500 mg through 5 mg (30 mg weights are aluminum) are made of stainless steel sheet metal. Fractional weights 3 mg and below are made of aluminum. Analytical weights 1 g and above are manufactured with adjusting cavities so that weights can be re-adjusted over time, if neccessary, as they wear through use. This is a clear advantage over single piece weights.
